NewBat Project Featured in Solar Magazine

May 2023 — The NewBat project, led by QuadriE, was recently featured in Solar Magazine. The article describes the development of a new type of aqueous organic redox flow battery (AORFB) that uses abundant, non-toxic organic molecules instead of vanadium — making the technology safer, more sustainable, and potentially much cheaper than current flow battery solutions.

The NewBat consortium brings together five Dutch partners: QuadriE BV (project lead), Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), MTSA Technopower, housing corporation Woonstichting ‘thuis, and energy cooperative Energie Samen Foodvalley. The project is funded by TKI Urban Energy under the Dutch Topsector Energy programme.

Key Innovation

The central innovation in NewBat is the combination of a novel tubular reactor cell design with size-exclusion membranes — an approach that is uniquely enabled by the properties of organic electrolytes. The result is a more compact, scalable, and cost-effective system compared to conventional plate-and-frame flow batteries.

QuadriE acts as consortium coordinator and IP holder. The project runs through March 2027.
